He further sought to examine British nostalgia for the "glory days" of World War II, and how an ongoing fascination with England's victory in the conflict informed contemporary attitudes towards espionage. It is almost a mirror image of Alice in Wonderland in terms of setting and imagery; the first book begins outdoors in the warm month of May, uses frequent changes in size as a plot device, and draws on the imagery of playing cards ; the second opens indoors on a snowy, wintry night exactly six months later, uses frequent changes in time and spatial directions as a plot device, and draws on the imagery of chess. The software we use sometimes flags "false positives" -- that is, blocks that should not have occurred. Fred Leiser: naturalised Pole who served as a recruited agent for The Department during World War II; has forgotten or is out of practice in nearly all his clandestine skills. Books with printing that can only be read when held up to a mirror, animated chess-pieces, memorable characters from nursery-rhymes like Humpty Dumpty, The Lion and the Unicorn, Tweedledum and Tweedledee and a host of strange creatures with even stranger names like the Jabberwock and the Bandersnatch. In Looking-Glass House, Alice no longer needs a fire, since the winter of the real world becomes summer in the imagined world, where the gardens are in bloom and the trees are filled with leaves. On the other side of the mirror, Alice discovers a room similar to her own but with several strange differences. Funny poems and delightful turns of phrase that Lewis Carroll is justly famous for, continue to sparkle in this book too. She hears a squeak behind her. As they speak, the White Queen plasters her finger, then screams in pain, and finally pricks her finger on a brooch.

She holds the book up to the mirror to read it properly and reads the poem on the page. The alternate dimension is not just a mirror image, but a comprehensive inversion of reality. Now the crew of the Vorpal Blade must find out what happened, if it was the Dreen and if they are colonizing the local systems. Funny poems and delightful turns of phrase that Lewis Carroll is justly famous for, continue to sparkle in this book too. Alice then walks with a fawn until it remembers it is a fawn and Alice a human child, which then it runs off.

Through the Looking Glass Summary

It has been suggested in a biography by Carroll's nephew, Stuart Dodgson Collingwood, that one of the reasons for this suppression was a suggestion from his illustrator, John Tenniel, [5] who wrote in a letter to Carroll dated 1 June If your IP address is shown by Maxmind to be outside of Germany and you were momentarily blocked, another issue is that some Web browsers erroneously cache the block.

She hears a squeak behind her. After informing them about the debacle in East Germany, Smiley tactfully convinces Leclerc to abandon Leiser, explaining that his obsolete equipment and sloppy techniques will make denials of his role as a spy more plausible.

The Red Knight gallops up to Alice and takes her as a prisoner. Series[ edit ] This series begins with the cataclysmic creation of a system for opening portals to other places in this universe.

She sits and begins eating, but the party quickly devolves into total chaos. To get aerial photographs, The Department pays a civilian pilot to "accidentally" divert his flight over the area. Alice finds herself in a forest, conversing with a chicken sized Gnat, who tells her about the different insects of Looking-Glass World.

Carroll incorporates many mirror themes, including opposites and time running backwards, into the plot. The White King takes words literally. Assigned to run the operation and handle Leiser's training and infiltration into East Germany. Yet despite all the analysis and study, Through the Looking-Glass remains a charming and innocent portrayal of childhood imagination and creativity.

Alice dozes off in this position, and her step through the mirror happens in her dream. The Sheep is cranky and rude to Alice. In Looking-Glass House, Alice no longer needs a fire, since the winter of the real world becomes summer in the imagined world, where the gardens are in bloom and the trees are filled with leaves.

At the beginning of the chapter, Alice enjoys a drowsy winter nap near the fire. As she leaves the room and begins heading down the stairs, she finds herself floating until she finally catches hold of the door-post to the door that leads outside of Looking-Glass House.

Plot summary[ edit ] During the early s, a British military intelligence organisation referred to as "The Department" receives dubious information from a defector that Soviet missiles are being placed at Rostocknear the West German border.

Poems like Jabberwocky explore the limits of language, while the Walrus and the Carpenter are simply hilarious. The Gnat grows from normal insect size to become as large as a chicken. It was directed by Frank Pierson. Though the shop is full of curious things, Alice finds that she cannot fix her eye on any one thing.

Haldane and Leclerc are mollified by their new roles within an appended Research Section to the Circus; only Avery sobs inconsolably over the futility of the operation and the loss of Leiser. Alice wheels around to find a White Pawn on the table.

The boat crashes into something and sends Alice tumbling to the ground. Alice then meets Tweedledee and Tweedledumwhom she knows from the famous nursery rhyme. He portrays Alice as a well-mannered child, brought up in a privileged background. The Looking Glass by Janet McNally 4 out of 5 Stars.

I haven't got much to say about this book except that I liked it very much. the story was interesting, the characters were likeable, the chapters were short which are much appreciated nowadays, the plot was easy to follow and I devoured this book in a matter of couple of hours/5.
