Parisian fashions were modified for the benefit of working women; skirts were made shorter, and corsets were made less tight. Children in Hull were killed by German Zeppelins. The suddenness with which the war broke out, its scope and the extreme violence of the first battles, followed by its duration, ensured that the First World War had a profound effect on its contemporaries. Her two brothers died in the battle in and her sister died of Spanish flu. The suddenness with which the war broke out, its scope and the extreme violence of the first battles, followed by its duration, ensured that the First World War had a profound effect on its contemporaries. Far from dissipating them, the context of war greatly reinforced social and cultural norms.
